On the COP24 Summit with Singaporean Minister for the Environment and Water Resources

Henryk Kowalczyk, Minister of Environment, attended a meeting with Masagos Zulkifli, Singapore’s Minister for the Environment and Water Resources. The meeting of the two ministers concerned the preparations for the UN COP24 Climate Summit.

The meeting, which was held on the 12th of April 2018 was also attended by Sławomir Mazurek, Vice-Minister of Environment.

“The most important objective of the Polish COP24 Presidency is to adopt a full implementation package for the Paris Agreement. We count on the support of all countries in achieving this goal”, said Minister Henryk Kowalczyk during the meeting.

The Paris Agreement is the first international agreement in history that compels all countries in the world to take action on climate protection. It was jointly agreed upon in December 2015 during the COP21 Summit in Paris. The implementation package is necessary in order for the obligations resulting from the Agreement to be fulfilled by the individual states - parties to the Agreement.

Talanoa Dialogue

The Talanoa Dialogue will also be an important element of the COP24 Summit. It is a debate of countries and non-governmental partners on increasing the effectiveness of implemented climate protection policies and actions.

“Poland, as the host of COP24, will support this process,” said Minister Henryk Kowalczyk during the meeting.

A ministerial meeting regarding financing of climate protection activities is also planned for COP24.

Singapore for the Paris Agreement

Minister Masagos Zulkifli pledged that Singapore would support the Polish Presidency. He also emphasised the role of the Paris Agreement.

"As an island country, Singapore is exposed to the consequences of climate change. We are committed to the success of the COP24, which is expected to lead to the implementation of the Paris Agreement”, Minister Masagos Zulkifli emphasised.
