Meeting of Vice-Minister Sałek with the Secretary of State of the Holy Sea, Cardinal Pietro Paolin

The leitmotiv of discussions between Vice-Minister of Environment, Government Plenipotentiary for Climate Policy Paweł Sałek and the Secretary of State of the Holy Sea, Cardinal Pietro Parolin were climate changes in moral and ethical context.

Vice-Minister Sałek presented the economic situation of Poland in context of the obligation under the Climate Convention, pointing out at the importance of coal in the Polish power industry and the role of biodiversity and forests in tackling climate changes. He referred also to the conference dedicated to the Pope’s encyclical Laudato Si’ organized in October 2016 in the Polish Parliament, which was most appreciated by the cardinal.

Cardinal Parolin welcomed the entry of the Paris Agreement into force and its ratification by Poland. Representative of the Holy Sea confirmed his intention to present a statement during the high-level meeting under the COP22 conference. He also expressed his sympathy for Poland emphasizing the historical role of our country in development of Catholic Church in Europe.         

The meeting was held on 15 November 2016 in Marrakesh during the COP22 climate summit.
