On the 9th of January 2018, the President of the Republic of Poland appointed Henryk Kowalczyk to the position of the new Minister of Environment in the cabinet of Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki. “The issue of smog in Poland is mainly caused by low emissions – pollution from the communal and household sector (nearly 90% of the pollution), including waste incineration and poor quality of domestic fuels, often combined with outdated and obsolete furnaces. Transportation, particularly in large cities, also contributes to the deterioration of air quality. Our priority, therefore, is above all to act in these sectors,” stresses the Minister of Environment Professor Jan Szyszko. “All the activities carried out by the Ministry of Environment in the Białowieża Forest comply with both national and EU law. The objective of the activities of foresters in the Forest is above all taking care for the well-being of the local community, stopping the gradation of the spruce bark beetle and maintaining public safety”, emphasized the Minister of the Environment Professor Jan Szyszko during the hearing at the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, regarding the dispute between Poland and the European Commission on the Białowieża Forest.
