Labelling

Article 47 of the act on 22 June 2001 on genetically modified organisms obliged to label GMO products. The obligation of labelling shall not apply to a product which contains GMOs or parts thereof in quantity equal or less than 1% of total mass of components of the product if the presence of protein or DNA from GMOs is unintended.
A GMO product label should contain following information:

  1. name of the GMO product and GMOs contained therein,
  2. first and last name or business name of the manufacturer or importer and the address,
  3. estimated area of use of the GMO product: industry, agriculture, forestry, common consumer use, or other specialised use,
  4. use of the GMO product and exact conditions of use with the information in justified cases on the type of environment for which the product is intended,
  5. particular requirements for storage and transport if specified in the permit,
  6. information on the difference in utility value between the GMO product and its traditional equivalent,
  7. means to be undertaken in case of non-deliberate release of GMOs contrary to requirements pertaining to placing the GMO product on the market if specified in the permit,
  8. permit number.

If the whole product is genetically modified, the label should read "genetically modified product". If only some components are genetically modified, the words "genetically modified" should appear next to the name of the component. The wording and information should be legible and typed with font of the same size as the name of the component or product.

Detailed requirements regarding the method of GMO product labelling shall be set out in the permit for placing on the market the GMO product.
