Preparations for Rio+20 Conference were the main subject of the 12th Delhi Sustainable Development Summit held from 2 to 4 February. The meeting was attended by Janusz Zaleski, Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of the Environment, who talked during a ministerial session on best sustainable development practices, including financing undertakings and related to climate change, about Polish experiences in this area.

Issues related to air quality, climate change and the conduct regarding environmental impact assessment in connection with the investments at the Polish-Czech border were the main subjects of talks during the meeting of Marcin Korolec and Tomas Chalupa, the Ministers of the Environment of Poland and the Czech Republic. The talks were held on 6 February in Warsaw.

By the end of the decade, nearly one third of Poland is to be covered with forests. In spite of a heap of hindrances on the way to achieve it, including a lack of terrains and poor economic interest of the landowners in afforestation, we are not far from this goal. Issues related to environmental protection are one of the priorities of the European Union. This is reflected in the total amount of money allocated to this purpose. In the financial perspective 2007-2013 Poland has received ca. EUR 28 billion for the Infrastructure and Environment Operational Programme (POIiŚ), over EUR 5 billion of which is allocated to environmental actions. Today, at the press conference in Szczawnica, Aneta Wilmańska, Under-Secretary of State in the Ministry of the Environment, signed a confirmation of subsidy assignment for a beneficiary from the Małopolska region. Małopolskie is a leading Voivodeship as far as the implementation of projects co-financed within this Programme is concerned.

Honours for help during flood

Fifty-one soldiers of the Polish Armed Forces who demonstrated remarkable involvement counteracting the effects of flood in 2010 have been honoured with departmental decorations "For Services to Environmental Protection and Water Management". The decorations were handed over by Stanisław Gawłowski, Secretary of State in the Ministry of the Environment, during a ceremony held on 12 January in the Ministry of the Environment.

As much as 1/3 of the Earth's surface is covered with forests. The International Year of Forests 2011 declared by the UNO focused on reminding us of their significance for people, economy and the environment. In Poland, the Year was concluded by the opening of a photo exposition entitled: "Las jest w nas" ("The Forest is in Us"), which will be open for visitors until 10 February in the Ministry of the Environment.

Durban conference delivers breakthrough for climate

The European Union welcomes the agreement reached at the UN climate conference in Durban as a historic breakthrough in the fight against climate change. After two weeks of negotiations, the 195 Parties to the UN climate change convention agreed on a roadmap, proposed by the EU, for drawing up a legal framework by 2015 for climate action by all countries. The Durban conference also agreed that there will be a second commitment period of the Kyoto Protocol, made operational the new Green Climate Fund for developing countries and approved a series of measures which build on the progress made at last year’s Cancun conference.

On 1-2 December this year, a delegation from the Ministry of the Environment led by Janusz Zaleski, Chief Nature Conservator, took part in a Regional Preparatory Meeting (RPM) of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) for Rio+20 in Geneva. At the request of the UNECE's Secretariat, Minister Zaleski co-chaired the meeting together with Ruslan Bultrikov, Vice-Minister of Environmental Protection in Kazakhstan.
