Today, Minister Maciej Nowicki inaugurated photo exhibition titled 'The Vistula - the last river of this kind in Europe' promoting the Vistula Bike Lane

The exhibition being held in Płock is the seventh of the total ten such type events which are planned in the framework of promotional campaign on the natural and tourism values of the Vistula River and its surroundings. Construction of the Vistula Bike Lane which will run alongside the Vistula river-course beginning from the Beskidy Mountains to the Baltic Sea will be also presented. Professor Maciej Nowicki, Minister of the Environment took patronage of this project.

After official inaugural ceremony, the Minister and the Mayor of the City of Płock held their meeting, to which the organisers of the exhibition also participated, including Ms. Grażyna Staniszewska, Member of the European Parliament, who presented the building and construction concept of the Vistula Bike Lane and the status of its advancement, as well as the self-governmental representatives of the Municipalities situated alongside the route planned.

The exhibition includes about 100 photos showing beauty and unique charm of the Vistula River named also the Queen of Rivers in Poland. They also display tourism values of the Vistula and its vicinity often having been yet not discovered for tourism purpose. The organisers of the exhibitions render information to visitors on the idea of Vistula Bike Lane. They also collect signatures of petition addressed to the Polish Self-governmental and Governmental authorities with the aim to arrange for a soonest possible construction of the route which as the national tourism product will provide opportunities for it to become a European attraction.

The Vistula Bike Lane is planned as a route leading mainly through the flood embankment ridges, while being free of any motor vehicle traffic that secures safe bike and pedestrian mobility through the areas situated alongside the Vistula river-course. Such delimitation of this route secures brings about contact with the river, the course of which for majority of tourists and populations in the riparian localities is hidden behind the embankments thus being inaccessible in practice to them. Non-invasive bike travelling gives the opportunities to familiarise with the riverine Vistula natural areas and it is one of the most environmentally friendly methods for active recreation and contacting nature.

Exhibition "The Vistula - the last river of this kind in Europe" was already presented in several Polish cities. In autumn, it will be also presented to the Parliament of the Republic of Poland, and in the European Parliament, in Brussels, as well as during the UN COP14 Poznan Climate Change Conference. Presentation of the exhibition during the Poznan Climate Summit will provide an opportunity to promote unique landscape and interesting natural areas of the central region of Poland. It will also draw attention of the general public to the need to care about the environment, especially in the aspect of dealing with the climate change problems.
