On 30 July 2008 (Wednesday), 12.00 hrs, Professor Maciej Nowicki, Minister of the Environment gives news conference on preparation to the UNFCCC COP14/MOP4
     

The meeting will be held at premises of Ministry of the Environment and it will be attended also by the Conference Organisation Team. The aim of the conference is to provide a handful of information concerning organizational issues of the 14th Conference of the Parties (COP14) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), serving as the 4th Meeting of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (MOP4) (as referred also to the Climate Change Conference). English translation of the meeting will be provided.

The meeting will be attended also by Ms. Salwa Dallalah, Coordinator, Conference Affairs Services, Secretariat UNFCCC, being the organiser of the Climate Change Conference; Ms. Katarzyna Parysek, Plenipotentiary of the President of the Town of Poznan for the Conference affairs, and Ms. Małgorzata Snarska Head, COP14/MOP4 Organisational Team, Ministry of the Environment, who will chair the meeting.

COP14/MOP4 - the biggest and the most important political world climate summit - will be for the first time held In Poland. The Polish hosts make all the arrangements necessary to receive in a best possible manner about 8 thousand participants, including Environmental and Climate Ministers and the national leaders. The two week Conference debates which will be held in the area of the International Poznan Fair Ltd. will certainly result in a number of decisions having global significance and being decisive for new Global Climate Change Agreement.

Is it possible that such type big worldwide event succeeds in Poland? What are the problems to deal with for the organisers of such tremendous non-commercial event to be organised in Poland? What is the current status of preparedness for the Conference in Poznan? How will COP14/MOP4 influence Poland?s worldwide image?

The aforementioned questions and also many other ones will be addressed during the meeting, including the relevant information as structured in the following way to be provided for during the present meeting:

1. COP14/MOP4 - general information on the Climate Change Conference, its organizers, participants; significance of the Conference for the international policies; the impact of the Conference decisions on the economic, social and legal changes; the role of Poland in COP14/MOP4; the role of COP/MOP President.

2. Information on the current state of preparedness for the COP14/MOP4 as achieved by Poland in the following key areas:

  • Accommodation of the participants: introduction of an uniform pre-payment and reservation system of the participants to the Conference - how the hotel problems are to be solved;
  • Transport - access to Poznan and the local municipal transportation issues;
  • Security during the Conference;
  • Partnership for Climate, information, promotion and media participation.

3. Appraisal of the advances in preparation for the Conference from the point of view of the international public opinion and the organizer of the Conference - the UNFCCC Secretariat.

The 14th Conference of the Parties (COP14) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), serving as the 4th Meeting of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (MOP4), will be held on 1-12 December 2008, in Poznan, Poland. The Conference is organised by the UNFCCC Secretariat (www.unfccc.int) and it is hosted by the Government of the Republic of Poland, Ministry of the Environment being the coordinating agency for preparation to the Conference (www.cop14.gov.pl).
