The 4th Meeting of the Scientific Council of the Kostrzyca Forest Gene Bank
to be held on 15 July 2008

The participants to the meeting, and Mr. Janusz Zaleski, Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of the Environment, will discuss the current matters concerning the Forest Gene Bank. They will also attend presentation of the Draft Programme for conservation of the protected plants gene resources on the Natura 2000 sites. Discussion on facilitating the administrative procedures on granting the permits for acquisition of seed crops is also planned.

The Kostrzyca Forest Gene Bank is an organisational unit of the "State Forests" National Holding that since 1996 has been managing collection and long tern storage of forest tree and shrub gene resources, and also monitoring of the quality of reproductive material in form of seeds being taken from the most valuable seed generation sites of the "State Forests" NH, as well as those of importance for nature conservation those have originated from the National Parks, nature reserves and natural monuments.

The idea to change from the European Black Triangle into a European Green Triangle has stimulated inspiration to establish the Kostrzyca Forest Gene Bank. The site is situated at the foot of the Giant (Karkonosze) Mountains, the Western Sudeten Mountain Ridge which besides the Izerskie Mountains were mostly affected by the ecological disaster which occurred on the turn of the Seventieth and Eightieth.

The Scientific Council of the Kostrzyca Forest Gene Bank acts not only in capacity of an advisory body, but it also plays the role of an opinion-making centre for all the matters relating to applied forest genetics and implementation of the National Strategy on forest biological diversity. Advice provided by the Scientific Council caused that the Kostrzyca Forest Gene Bank has written into overall implementation of the "State Forests" NH's policy leading to sustainable management of all forests in Poland pursuant to multi-functional and cross-sectoral principles and forms.
