The 9th Conference of Directors General of the Organisations for Management of the State-Owned Forest in Europe (9-12 June, in Białowieża) Mr. Janusz Zaleski, Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of the Environment, participates to debate on the current problems and challenges facing the organisations which manage the State-Owned Forest in Europe. They discuss also the issues concerning protection of forest biodiversity, climate change, and the role forest play in counteracting global warming, principally through delivery of biomass for generation of energy. The Conference provides also an opportunity to exchange views on implementation of the Natura 2000 European Ecological Network. The agenda includes also a study tour over the Białowieski National Park and in forest managed by the Białowieża and Hajnówka Forest Inspectorates. The aim of the tour is to present practical aspects of forest management in economic tree stands and in legally protected areas. The Conference held by Directors
General was structured into two sessions. The first includes the issues
pertaining to "Wood biomass as energy source: challenge or opportunity
to forests in Europe". The second refers to "Forest biological diversity
and forest management: conservation of habitats and species in economic
forests in the light of legal provisions establishing the Natura 2000 sites".
