On 6 June 2008, in Luxembourg, Professor Maciej Nowicki, Minister of the Environment, participated to debates held by the EU Environment Council

 
The last EU Environment Council under the Slovenian presidency, with participation by Environmental Ministers of the EU Member States, took place in Luxembourg on 5 June 2008 on World Environment Day. The issues on the agenda included policy debates on the Climate and Energy package and the proposed regulation to reduce CO2 emissions from new cars. Views were exchanged on genetically modified organisms and a decision prepared on a common position on whaling.

Professor Maciej Nowicki presented the major Poland's stipulations and objections concerning the Climate and Energy package. He emphasised that Poland does not deny any of the objectives included therein, but only demands changes to be introduced in both the relevant mechanisms and the paths leading to them. The position presented by Professor Maciej Nowicki caused positive responses from majority of the EU Member States. 
Professor Maciej Nowicki provided also information on the state of preparation achieved in Poland for the 14th Conference of the Parties (COP-14) to the UN Framework Climate Convention (UNFCCC), serving as the 4th Meeting of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (MOP-4), to be held on 1-12 December 2008, in Poznan. 

The next meeting of the EU Environment Council is to be held under the French presidency.
