Celebration of the WED to be held under patronage of Minister of the Environment is aimed at bringing closer to the public the matters of the protection of the environment and environmental education. In Poland, the Wielkopolska Province hosts this year celebration of the WED. Its agenda for 5 and 6 June 2008 includes, amongst others, the varnishing day and art exhibition titled "Let's Make the Urban Life Space Better to Humans", the aim of which is to demonstrate the adaptation opportunities of the urban environment to create human-friendly natural dwelling sites. Scientific conference titled "Climate and Environment" is also planned as dedicated to the issues of climate change, assessment of its impact on the local and global scales, use of renewable energy sources and water management in the Wielkopolska Region, and also performance of the restricted use area of the Poznan - Krzesiny airfield. Mr. Janusz Zaleski, Under-Secretary of State, Ministry of the Environment, and Professor Zbigniew Kundzewicz, expert on Earth Sciences, Winner of Nobel Prize, will participate. Professor Z. Kundzewicz is to deliver presentation titled "Global Climate Change". A topical photo exhibition dedicated to ship wrecks ("Ship-Wrecks - My Passion") will be open and held at the Voivodship Office of the Wielkopolska Province to present many interesting underwater photos aimed at reflection on the adverse environmental impacts of man. The "Recycling Concert" planned on 6 June 2008 during which an attempt to beat Guinness record will be performed in category named the "The Biggest Recycling Band" which will play music on instruments produced with recycled waste materials. This musical eco-show will be performed at the Poznan Waste Landfill, at the Poznan Waste Landfill, in the Suchy Las District of Poznan, address: 1, Meteorytowa Str. Anyone is welcomed to register for two-day free of charge drum-workshop, during which big 400-person band will be formed that with its mega bass rhythm will not only chase out all smog from above Poznan, but will also beat the Guinness record and provide the participants with a lot of positive energy and satisfaction. Yet, more shows are planned after that event including concerts to be performed by groups such as the Chad Republic and the Ictus Sound System. Reusable shopping bags for (to substitute plastic ones) will be distributed among the Poznan inhabitants, and they will yet have the opportunity to attend marching throughout the City streets and to enjoy participation in educational picnic titled "Environmental Day for the Small and Big". The WED will involve also collection campaigns of large-scale waste and waste electronic equipment that was already inaugurated on 2 June 2008 in the biggest towns of the Wielkopolska Province - Poznan, Leszno, Kalisz, Konin and Pi³a. The campaign will last by 6 June 2008. Additionally, large scale graphics, 920 sqm in size, is placed on the façade of the Voivodship Office building, as inspired by painting "Venus and Mars", by Sandro Botticelli, not to present any renaissance harmony but to reflect everyday problems pertaining to the environment. Banner placed next to the logo of this year celebration of the WED will be the major visual marking of these joyful and important days. It was first established by the UN General Assembly during the Stockholm Conference which was held on 5 June 1972. Nowadays the WED is celebrated in more than 100 countries, including Poland being 18th such celebration. 2008 was declared in Poznan as the Climate and Environment Year. Beyond celebration of the WED, Poznan will host the Climate Change Conference, i.e. COP14 of the UN Framework Climate Convention, serving as the 4th Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (MOP4) which is to be held on 1-12 December 2008 in this town, and being the biggest such type event ever held in Poland. About 10-12 thousand participants from 190 States are expected to participate.
