"Energy and Climate Change
- The Global Challenge, Regional Solutions" -
conference with
participation by Professor Maciej Nowicki, Minister of the Environment
On 21 May 2008, in the Foksal
Press Centre, Warsaw, conference titled "Energy and Climate Change. Global
Challenges - Regional Solutions" took place. Professor Maciej Nowicki,
Polish Minister of the Environment, and Mr. Thomas Becker, Secretary of
State, Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy, participated.
Numerous conference guests
were welcomed with brief addresses delivered by Mr. Uffe Ellemann-Jensen,
Chairman of the Baltic Development Forum, HE. Mr. Hans Michael Kofoed-Hansen,
Danish Ambassador to Warsaw, and Mr. Paweł Świeboda, Chairman of the Conference
(President of "demosEUROPA" Centre for European Strategy). All they emphasised
tremendous role to be played by the future Climate Change Conferences,
including the COP14 to be held in Poznan this year, and the Copenhagen
COP15, in 2008. They also stressed the need of cooperation aimed at achievement
of the Post 2010 Global Agreement.
The conference was structured
into two parts, including a scientific seminar and the accompanying news
conference held at the beginning.
During the given by Mr. Maciej
Nowicki, Minister of the Environment, and Mr. Thomas Becker, Secretary
of State, Danish Ministry of Climate and Energy.
Professor M. Nowicki, provided
information on the organisational aspects of the COP 14 Climate Change
Conference to be held in Poznan, on 1-12 December. Minister M. Nowicki
emphasised the responsibility Poland assumed by organisation of the Climate
Change Conference (COP14). It is a leading event for both Poland and the
European Union as the whole that provides the opportunities to a Global
Agreement. Professor Maciej Nowicki said that the preparatory activities
are going smooth and in accordance to the plan assumed, and therefore successful
output of the COP14 are expected.
Secretary Thomas Becker presented
the issue of greenhouse gas reduction by50 % as the matter of priority
by 2050. He emphasised that it will be not an easy challenge, given the
energy cycle and new investment being implemented. He said that the European
Union has to serve as a good example for the rest of the world, by initiation
of specific actions aimed at reduction of the emissions. He concluded his
address with a promise to provide assistance in the organisation arrangements
of and the wishes of success to the Poznan Climate Change Conference. Professor
Maciej Nowicki, Minister of the Environment, expressed his gratitude.
Then, both Statesmen replied
to question asked by the guests, and consequently the scientific part of
the conference was begun.
