The Wielkopolska Province hosts the 2008 World Environmental Day 
(5 - 6 June 2008, Poznan)
   
  
Celebration to be held under patronage of Minister of the Environment is aimed at bringing closer to the public the matters of the protection of the environment and environmental education.  

Scientific conference titled "Climate and Environment" and an art exhibition titled "Make Better Urban Life Space for Humans" are planned to organise. The agenda includes also an attractive event called "Recycling Concert" to be performed on 6 June 2008 when an attempt to beat Guinness record will be undertaken in category named the "The Biggest Recycling Band" which will play music on instruments produced with recycled waste materials. This musical eco-show will be performed at the Poznan Waste Landfill, in the locality of Suchy Las, near Poznan

Moreover, so called ecological (reusable) shopping bags (to substitute the plastic ones) will be given to the Poznan inhabitants, and they will yet have the opportunity to attend marching alongside the City streets and to enjoy participation in educational picnic titled "Environmental Day for the Small and Big". The World Environment Day, being commemorated each year on 5 June, was originally established by the UN General Assembly during the Stockholm Conference which was held on 5 June 1972.  Nowadays the WED is celebrated in more than 100 countries, including Poland being 18th such celebration.

Year 2008 was declared in Poznan as the Climate and Environment Year. Beyond celebration of the WED, Poznan will host the 14th Conference of the Parties (COP14) to the UN Framework Climate Convention, serving as the 4th Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (MOP4) which is to be held on 1-12 December 2008 in this town, and being the biggest such type event ever held in Poland. About 10-12 thousand participants from 190 States are expected to participate.
