Workshop on Advances in Marine Climatology CLIMAR-III

On 6-9 May 2008, in Gdynia, the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, the Joint WMO-IOC Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology JCOMM, and the Inter-Governmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC/UNESCO), organise jointly the International Workshop on Advances in Marine Climatology (CLIMAR-III). Also the University of Gdansk, NOAA (USA) and SOC (UK) participate to organisation arrangements. The International Comprehensive Ocean-Atmosphere Data Set (ICOADS) and the Marine Authority, in Gdynia, have provided support to this event. The debates begin on Tuesday, 6 May, at 9.30 hrs, in the Oceanography Institute of University of Gdansk, in Gdynia, Al. Marszałka Piłsudskiego Str.

CLIMAR-III is the subsequent third such workshop dedicated to marine meteorology, climatology, and oceanography. The workshops are being held each 3-5 years. The firs was organised in the USA (2000), and second in Belgium (2003).

Almost 85 scientists representing a dozen countries and 6 continents who deal with the issues in question participate to the present Workshop. Presentation of more than 30 lectures, including several ones to be presented by outstanding specialists in the field of marine meteorology, climatology, and oceanography and more than 30 poster presentations will be delivered. On the last day of the Workshop presentation of the results are to be presented which were attained during a several-year period of studies performed by a team of almost 80 scientists grouped in an international team dealing with the climate issues in the Baltic Sea Basin, including also those wh9ich concern the consequences for both the coastal zone and marine environment.

The major goals of the workshop are: to review ongoing developments in the flow and standardization of marine (meteorological and oceanographic) data and metadata under JCOMM; and to foster and coordinate the development of marine (meteorological and oceanographic) climate data and products; as well as to seek and compile appropriate contributions for a second revision of the JCOMM Technical Report no. 13 "Advances in the Applications of Marine Climatology"

The workshop is aimed at presentation of own achievements of its individual participants and to review the most important achievements in this field that were attained in the past few years, and to analyse the effectiveness of the observation and measurements systems currently operated in seas and oceans, in the aspect of their roles in shaping weather and climate conditions, and protection of natural resources. Formulation of recommendations for the two international organisations, WMO and IOC, in the scope of the changes necessary in performance of the observation and research programmes they coordinate and agreeing upon a development vision for the years to come is also the objective of this Worksop.

The texts of all papers delivered will be published by WMO and circulated among all meteorological and oceanographic services of their Member States (who are more numerous than those in the United Nations). The most essential and noteworthy texts will be also published in the International Journal of Climatology which is a scientific magazine known very well worldwide. The texts being published in this magazine form so called dynamic part of an international Application Guide on Marine Climatology. Several selected articles will be also published in the Institute's of Meteorology and Water Management Air&Water magazine being published by the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management.
