Communiqué delivered after briefing given jointly in Warsaw by Professor Maciej Nowicki, Polish Environmental Minister, and Mr. Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the UNFCCC

On 28 February 2008, in Warsaw, Professor Maciej Nowicki, Polish Environmental Minister, and Mr. Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, gave their joint briefing dedicated to the organisational matters of the 14th Conference of the Parties (COP14) to the UN Framework Climate Convention (UNFCCC), serving as the 4th Meeting of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (MOP4), to be held in Poznan this December.

Mr. Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, said that the aim of the present Climate Conference in Poznan is to attain progress in four critical areas, including: reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, adaptation to climate change, introduction of new technology and new funding sources.

„- We are responsible for climate change and if we fail to undertake respective counter activities, the consequences, both environmental and economic, as well as those concerning safety – said Mr. Yvo de Boer, Executive Secretary of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Hopefully, there are new technologies which will help us in preventing the impacts – he added.

In Executive Secretary’s opinion, the Climate Conference in Poznan will only succeed if the leading role of developed countries in restraining climate change could be retained, and at the same time developing countries are involved into cooperation in this field.

Professor Maciej Nowicki emphasised the role of Poland as the host-country of the 14th Conference of the Parties (COP14) to the UN Framework Climate Convention (UNFCCC), serving as the 4th Meeting of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (MOP4), to be held in Poznan this December. It is the greatest conference organised so far by the UNO.
